I like that Rask's contract sets the table for the King. The Rangers getting squeezed by the cap is great for the rest of the league. They better hope Richards doesn't have health issues at the next amnesty buy-out period.

Great blog!

I think both of these deals are great for Boston. Bergeron is the future captain and Rask was amazing in the playoffs. As you said in your blog, these deals are going to become the norm. King Henrik is going to get a mega deal.

Props to PC on getting Bergeron signed early. Price tag was going to increase even more.

I think both deals are great for the club. Bergeron deserves every penny, guy embodies everything that it means to be a true Bruin. I have little concerns about his health and think he will only get better.

I'm happy about Tuukka's contract, the money is good but the term is a little long. The price you have to pay to lock up your franchise goalie. With the cap expected to go up in two years and the rapid growth of the game makes the contract easier to look it. Assuming the league doesn't lose money, in 5 years Tuukka's contract is going to look small compared to other goalies. I remember when Timmy signed his 4yr $20M contract and people lost their minds. That seems like chump change now.

Well good to have you back.

What's your take on the open 3rd line wing spot? I gotta think to start the season it comes down to Smith and Caron, both guys have played at the NHL level. Would love to see Khoklachev but I think he needs another year of seasoning in the A.

I believe the gap from top of the line goaltenders to good ones is smaller than that of a top positional player to a good positional player. For this reason I am always skeptical of the long term big money deals for goalies.

That doesn't change the fact that Rask is an excellent goalie.

I want a full year of Koko on an AHL top-six to be honest. I think Caron's the natural pick, but if Jared Knight can turn some heads at camp he may be a darkhorse pick. I think it's really down to four though -- Caron, Smith, Fraser, and Camara. In that order, too.

I think the hope is that the league will continue to flourish and the cap will keep rising. Which would make this deal easier to swallow in 4-5 years.

I don't disagree with that logic. I think the cap will hit 80M before the CBA runs out.

Why all the Caron love? We've seen enough of him to know what he is, and he is not an NHL caliber winger who should be given consistent minutes. If I'm the Bruins I am desperately hoping one of the younger guys beats him out in camp. Even if Smith, Fraser, or Camara are slightly behind Caron I would give them a shot because there is a chance they'll improve whereas Caron has all but topped out. I also don't think it's beyond Chiarelli to bring in a veteran later this offseason. Now it won't be someone for big money or big years, but this is the GM who brought the likes of Brian Rolston and Jay Pandolfo off the scrap heap. Why wouldn't he try and find a veteran, third line winger looking for another cup run to sign a 1 year deal? Someone like Colby Armstrong or Chuck Kobasew, or maybe a true veteran presence like Milan Hejduk or Jamie Langenbrunner if PC wanted to pony up a little more money. I think the first two could be had for under 1 mil and the latter two for perhaps around 1.5.

Chiarelli seems pretty content with letting the younger players fight for that last spot. I don't think bringing in another veteran is the right move. Armstrong and Kobasew show very little to nothing with their respective clubs this past season. Langenbrunner was hurt in St. Louis and hasn't seen a good season in a few years. This team is chalk full of veterans and leaders that they don't need to bring in another, especially ones who wont contribute much. Let the younger kids get ice time and fight through some growing pains. This team is deep enough to allow for them give ice time to youngsters.

I may have to stop watching the NHL if $7M per year for 8 years is going to be considered a small deal compared to other goalies in the near future.

That is a hideous thought to comprehend.

Both contracts have a measure of risk associated with them but I think they will ultimately prove to be good deals for both the Bruins and Rask/Bergeron.

He did let in 2 goals in Game 6 through his five-hole, didn't he? Including that beauty scored by Toews on the break away to tie the game at 1.

So two goals in 1 game five-hole makes him bad and not worth the money? Go troll on the Blackhawks blog

So how do fans feel about rasks contract?

Unwarranted? Perfect? Too much? Worth the sacrifices?

Personally it seems a little outrageous he gets 7 mil. As Ty mentioned only one other goalie is in that bracket right now, and rinne certainly did far more than Rask to earn the contract (even if its still too much).

Seems kind of hilarious that rask is getting more than quick, when quick was arguably more impressive in the playoffs last year than rask was in 12/13.

Still think he's a great goalie, suppose time will tell if its worth it.

I never said he was a bad goalie, but Rask does play a stand up style that exposes his five-hole, whereas Crawford plays a butterfly style which exposes the top corners of the net, and in particular his glove side....oh that glove side!
